Undergraduate Research
Students work closely with faculty on high-impact environmental research projects including:

• Microplastics in stormwater infrastructure
• Water treatment and water quality modeling
• Sustainable materials and green infrastructure
• Environmental chemistry and emerging contaminants

Many students present their work at conferences or co-author publications.

Internships & Industry Connections
Our students apply their skills through internships that connect classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges. Opportunities span a wide range of sectors, including:

Students regularly participate in field-based learning that connects classroom concepts to real-world environmental systems. These experiences include:

• Site tours of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities
• Hands-on field labs in local streams, wetlands, and along Lake Erie
• Green infrastructure installations throughout the City of Erie
• Community-engaged projects integrated into courses such as Environmental Toxicology and Water Quality

These field experiences provide students with practical exposure to environmental monitoring, system design, and stakeholder collaboration.

Professional Development & Leadership
Our students develop professionally through:

• Career-prep activities embedded in coursework
• Participation in Professional Academies
• Resume workshops and graduate school preparation
• Guest speakers and alumni interactions in classes
• Involvement in professional organizations (e.g., Environmental Club, Society of Women Engineers)

Success Beyond the Degree

Our graduates apply their skills across a wide range of industries and organizations—from local agencies to global corporations. Whether they go into environmental consulting, public health, engineering design, or graduate research, our alumni are making a difference. Over the past seven years, approximately 90% of domestic graduates in Environmental Engineering were employed prior to graduation.
