Coursework and Field Experiences

The coursework and field experiences in the Accelerated Special Education Certification Program are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to make a lasting impact. Each course offers valuable insights and hands-on learning, empowering you to become a confident, effective special education teacher.

GEDU 537 Special Education Overview (ONLINE)
This course offers an introduction to federal mandates in special education, covering exceptionalities, pre-referral strategies, cultural diversity, instructional modifications, educational assessment, and legal issues. It emphasizes the special education process, including evaluation, identification, eligibility determination, and placement of students with exceptionalities.

GEDU 538 Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions (HYBRID)
This course introduces teacher candidates to positive behavioral supports and interventions aimed at creating a productive learning environment. Topics include Response to Intervention (RTI), school-wide supports, classroom strategies, social skills instruction, behavioral assessments, and developing behavioral support plans. Candidates complete a functional behavior assessment and create effective support plans, with field experience embedded throughout the semester.

GEDU 609 Inclusive Classroom Practices (ONLINE)
This course explores elements needed to develop a productive learning environment for diverse learners and examines methods used to provide effective instruction to diverse students through the lens of collaboration and co-teaching and research-based strategies.

GEDU 539 Literacy for Students with Exceptionalities (HYBRID)
This course focuses on corrective and remedial strategies for language, reading, and writing development in children with exceptionalities. It covers using assessment data to plan instruction, the connection between literacy and behavior, progress monitoring, explicit instruction, and research-based writing strategies. The course includes an embedded hands-on field experience.

GEDU 542 High Incidence Disabilities (ONLINE)
This course covers issues related to high incidence disabilities, including communication disorders, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance, focusing on instructional strategies, curricular adaptations, and service coordination.

GEDU 570 Low Incidence Disabilities (HYBRID)
This course focuses on low incidence disabilities, including pervasive developmental disorders, moderate to significant intellectual disabilities, and medically fragile conditions. It covers instructional strategies, assistive technology, community-based instruction, and service coordination, with exposure to various educational environments for children with these disabilities. The course field experience in a special education setting.

GEDU 544 Data Driven Instruction/Student Teaching (HYBRID)
This course teaches candidates how to select and use assessment tools, analyze data from various assessments, and apply it to improve the achievement of students with special needs. Emphasizing ethical data collection, IEP goals, and state/local assessments, it also includes Student Teaching field experience.

GEDU 571 Program Planning and Assessment/Student Teaching (HYBRID)
This course explores assessment procedures used to identify, evaluate, and plan instruction for children with special needs. It covers formal and informal assessments, IEP writing, and progress monitoring strategies, focusing on a range of assessments such as diagnostic, formative, and summative. The course includes Student Teaching Field Experience.
