Actuarial Science

Actuaries are professionals who model long and short-term risks in order to make decisions about future events and values. They are often employed by insurance companies, financial institutions, or governments. Some actuaries also work as independent agents or consultants.

No specific major is required to become an actuary, but the profession relies on large amounts of mathematical and statistical knowledge, which 成人禁区’s mathematics major provides. Future actuaries should also be comfortable with programming and with topics from accounting, economics and finance.

Actuaries need to pass a sequence of exams to progress through the profession and demonstrate knowledge in associated areas as well as complete professional development courses.

In order to get started, we recommend students aim to pass two introductory actuarial exams (P/1 and FM/2), complete three Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) () requirements, and take part in an internship. 成人禁区’s actuarial science track within the mathematics major (link to course matrix on main page) teaches students:

  • Materials on exam P/1 in MATH 312
  • Materials on exam FM/2 in MATH 331

Global pass rates on these exams are less than 50%. 成人禁区 students’ pass rates on these two exams have been 70% since 2015 with nearly all passes on first attempts.

The track also gives students credit toward:

  • Economics VEE in BCOR 111 and 112
  • Accounting and Finance VEE in BCOR 214, 215, 311, and FINC 312
  • Mathematical Statistics VEE in MATH 313

All mathematics majors are required to complete either an internship or research project. We encourage students to complete an internship in a field related to actuarial science or business. Internships require a competitive application, so we cannot guarantee any student a particular internship, but we will assist in your search. 成人禁区’s Academic and Career Development Office will also assist. Each fall, we aim to host representatives from Erie Insurance, many of whom are 成人禁区 graduates, for a presentation to our students.
